Sam Jones who was once a champion boxer in the 1970’s, opens his gym to the public free of charge. Sam offers a place for many boxers around the area to train as well as receive free coaching.
Sam’s Gym (center) was built in 1936 by Sam’s father, and has been in operation ever since. After the booming mine town died down however, Glouster grew into a impoverished drug-ridden town. The gym gives many a chance to escape the pressures of the surrounding area.
Nathan Guy (left) spares Jack Waldven (right) as a crowd of people watch from around the ring. The skill level of the boxers who train at the gym ranges from beginner to professional. Sam will often step in to referee the weekly sparing matches, and provide tips in-between rounds.
Glouster resident Nathan Guy unlaces his shoes after sparing a few friends in the ring. Many of the gym’s more longtime loyal boxers will help instruct the less experienced boxers, and will often help Sam in anyway needed. Nathan has been attending the gym for over 10 years.

Sam’s main goal is to keep the kids in the area off the streets and in a healthy environment. Jones often says he would prefer to coach a champion in life over a champion in the ring.

The older and more experienced boxers at the gym will often help out with the kids, and coach them when Sam is busy. ÒI like coming to gym because it gives you something to do and works you real hardÓ, Spear said.

Participants of all ages are welcome in the gym, and it is often filled with young children who are looking to learn. “It’s just a great place for the kids,” Renee said.

Every year Sam donates money to the local school for textbooks that is raised by hosting local fight nights. Sam intends to continue his generosity for many years to come.
